The STEM OPT to H1B timeline
Your 36-month window has distinct phases. Here is how to play each one.
Pre-graduation
Apply for OPT EAD. Start building your base resume with NeatStack. Research which companies sponsor H1B.
Initial OPT
Apply broadly to roles that match your STEM degree. Use NeatStack to tailor each application in 20 seconds. Target companies with established H1B programs.
STEM Extension
You now have 2 more H1B lottery attempts. Focus on getting promoted internally or moving to a larger sponsor. Keep your resume updated with quantified US work experience.
H1B Filing
Your employer files the H1B petition. If selected in the lottery, your status changes October 1. If not, you have remaining STEM OPT time to try again.
Why STEM OPT candidates apply differently
The clock and the competition change the math. Eight realities that shape how you should run your search.
- 01You need to apply to 50-200+ jobs during your OPT window
- 02Each application must pass ATS to reach a human recruiter
- 03Your resume needs US formatting: no photos, no DOB, no visa status
- 04Keywords must match the exact job posting language
- 05You are competing against US citizens who need no sponsorship
- 06Speed matters: you cannot spend 2 hours per application
- 07Your E-Verify eligible employer list is smaller than the full market
- 08Every lottery miss costs you a year of your OPT window
Common questions
What is STEM OPT and how long does it last?
STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of the standard 12-month OPT work authorization for F-1 students who graduated with a STEM degree. Combined with initial OPT, you get up to 36 months of work authorization in the US, giving you three chances at the H1B lottery.
Which degrees qualify for STEM OPT?
Degrees on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list qualify. This includes Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and hundreds of other programs. Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS list.
Can I use NeatStack to apply to STEM OPT eligible employers?
Yes. NeatStack works for any US job application. STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify and have a formal training plan (Form I-983). Most large tech, finance, and healthcare companies meet these requirements - the same companies listed on our H1B sponsors page.
Should my resume mention STEM OPT status?
No. Do not put visa or work authorization details on your resume. US resume conventions and anti-discrimination guidelines advise against it. Your EAD card and I-20 handle work authorization - keep it off the resume. NeatStack follows US formatting standards by default.
How many jobs should I apply to during STEM OPT?
Most successful STEM OPT candidates apply to 50-200+ positions. The key is tailoring each resume to the specific job description so you pass ATS filters. NeatStack generates a tailored version in under 20 seconds, making it realistic to submit 10+ customized applications per day.
What happens if I don't get H1B during STEM OPT?
If your STEM OPT expires without H1B approval, you have a 60-day grace period to either leave the US, change status (e.g., enroll in a new degree program), or find a cap-exempt employer (universities, nonprofits, government research labs). Having a strong, ATS-optimized resume ready for cap-exempt employers is critical during this window.
